Taking a Closer Look at PA Business Taxes The House Finance Committee, of which I am a member, held an informational meeting at the Capitol to explore the challenges facing Pennsylvania businesses as they strive to emerge from the pandemic. Several business owners and business advocates provided testimony about the need for changes to Pennsylvania’s business tax structure, namely the Corporate Net Income Tax (CNI), which they said is too high. As someone with a strong business background, I agree.
I supported legislation by Rep. Frank Ryan (R-Lebanon) that would have eliminated property taxes for every Pennsylvanian and shifted the burden to other taxes that would have been fair and equitable. The proposal was rejected by many, particularly seniors, who misunderstood the bill’s plan to tax retirement income. The state director of the AARP expressed his support for the elimination of property taxes and I urged him to help us educate the public on the benefits of this proposal.
